"How Many Keywords Do People Typically Type Into Search Engines?"
Hitwise have produced a useful graph which shows the average number of keywords that internet users type into the search field on the major search engines.
You will see from the graph that the majority of people still type just one or two keywords - Canada ~50%, US ~43% and the UK ~55%. However what this graph does not reveal is that the trend overtime is towards more keywords in search terms.
Another conclusion is the more sophisticated a user and market, the more keywords they use to narrow down the search results.
The Number Of Keywords Used In Searches On The Major Search Engines

Why Is This Important?
Website owner should understand the keywords that drive traffic to their website. The graph suggests that one or two word searches should generate the most traffic for a site, but as every internet marketer knows these are the most competitive terms and hardest to achieve page one listings on the search results pages. Therefore most marketers focus on phrases with three or more words. This graph provides an indication of what percentage of the search traffic they are chasing and how it varies in different countries.
